Capturing the Screen in SIMULATE for the SX .......... To Assembly Language info page. ... To Prof. Wade's information page

We assume that you've created the .LST file per instructions and have gotten Simulate to run. The object is to take data from Simulate by capturing the screen as shown and pasting it into a WORD document as your report. You can then print the WORD document in the usual manner. We also assume that you are familiar with the pasting process so we will just say PASTE rather than "click on EDIT then on PASTE" (or "CTRL-V" or whatever of the various methods you want to use).

-----------------------------------------------------------

Note that there are two ways in windows of capturing the screen. If you press the PRINT SCREEN button, the whole screen will be put on the clipboard. If you press ALT-PRINT SCREEN, only the active portion of the screen will be put on the clipboard. (This may vary slightly in different versions of windows.) In any case only the visible portion of the screen is copied; what is off the screen is not copied. If more that what you want is copied, you can always crop it in WORD so that only what you want shows. (Instructions for cropping are at end.)

-----------------------------------------------------------

When you run Simulate, it usually runs in a DOS window (as oposed to full-screen) with the taskbar at the bottom of the screen still showing. This makes it easy to switch between WORD and SIMULATE just by clicking in the task bar. If the task bar does not show on your computer, you may be able to switch in and out of the full-screen mode by pressing CTRL-ENTER. Note that even if the taskbar is not visible, you can still switch tasks by using ALT-TAB -- or you can get back to the desktop by pressing the windows key and then "D" while still holding the windows key.

--Before you start Simulate open up a blank WORD document which you will use to write your report. Them minimize WORD (click in the "_" in the upper right corner).

--Open Simulate by clicking on the SIMULATE SX icon and following the instructions on the screen. (Note that the .LST file must be stored in the My Documents\SX\ folder.)

--Work with Simulate, when you have the screen you want to capture, press ALT-PRINT SCREEN.

--Switch to WORD by clicking in the task bar or using ALT-TAB

--Paste the screen picture into WORD, once in WORD, use it appropriately.

-----------------------------------------------------------

COMPLICATION: There are 2 ways word can paste, as a picture or as text.

-If it is as a picture, you can use the various WORD tools to resize or annotate it (see next section). This should be the format that will be used if you have not been in full screen mode.

-If you have captured the screen in the full screen mode it should be captured as text. If it is as text you will have to reformat the text so that it looks like the original screen. You must choose a uniformly spaced text (not proportional spaced) -- Courier is a good choice. Also you will have to make the point size smaller so each line fits on the page without wrapping around. By adjusting the font you should be able to get a representation of the screen picture to use in your report.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Screen capture usually captures more that you need to show.  You should crop off unwanted parts of the picture to save space and make your report clearer.

How to crop (cut off unwanted parts) a picture in WORD:

--click on VIEW then Toolbars. On the Toolbars sub-menu click on Pictures.

--click anywhere in the picture, the tools in the special Pictures Toolbar which had been grayed out will now become useable.

--click on the CROP tool. It is near the center of the toolbar. If you do not know which tool it is, move the mouse over each tool and leave it over each for a short time. The name of the tool will be shown and you can find the CROP tool.

--Depending of the version of word, the mouse may change to the CROP tool. This tool is only active when it is on one of the "handles" of the picture (the marks in each corner and in the center of each side). When it is over a handle it will always be the shape of the crop tool.

--Click and hold on any of the handles and move the mouse so the picture gets smaller, when you release the button the portion you moved over will be removed from the picture.
